The Clemson volleyball team dropped a tough, 3-1 (25-22, 15-25, 20-25, 24-26) to No. 21 Florida State (23-5, 17-1 ACC) on Friday night in Jervey Gym. Clemson (18-11, 10-8 ACC) played its first home televised match, which appeared on ESPN3, before a crowd of 1,600.
Serenat Yaz posted a career-high 23 kills and hit .367, recording 12 digs for her 12th double-double of the season in the loss. Mo Simmons led Clemson with 17 digs, and also registered 12 kills for her fourth double-double of the year.
Hannah Brenner tied a season high with 51 assists, and led Clemson to a .224 hitting night, but the Seminoles registered a .299 mark on their way to earning at least a share of the ACC Championship.
Florida State’s Jekateria Stepanova turned in a spectacular performance, as she had 20 kills against just one error, and also added 12 digs.
Clemson has now dropped three in a row after a four-match winning streak. Clemson took the first set on Friday in front of more than 1,600 fans.
The Tigers hit .300 or higher in two of the four sets and were able to side out on 57 percent of their opportunities, but were out-blocked by a 12.0-to-9.0 margin and hit the ball out of boundaries on 12 occasions.
Sandra Adeleye also added 10 kills for Clemson, who fell in four sets for the first time this season in four sets, and dropped to 10-2 at home this season.
Clemson got on the board first with a 25-22 win in the first set. Clemson hit .394 in the frame while holding the Seminoles to a .263 mark. Yaz had five kills, while Simmons added four, and Clemson doubled up FSU 4-2 blocking. Florida State led late by a 22-21 margin before Clemson rattles off four in a row after a Jolene Jordan Hoover timeout. Clemson went to Yaz for three straight kills, and then won the set when Alexa Rand blocked a Visnja Djurdjevic attack.
Florida State, which entered the match ranked 10th nationally in RPI, took full control in the second set, using an early 10-2 run to take a 14-6 lead, and stretch the lead to as many as 12 on their way to a 25-15 win. They held Clemson to just .044 hitting and Djurdjevic had nine digs, and Yaz’ five kills and Faust’s three were not enough.
The Tigers took a 14-9 lead in the third set to try and take control of the match. Leading by as many as three at 17-14, Clemson looked to be getting by with a small cushion before FSU turned the tables with a 7-2 run to take a 21-19 lead, and then ran off four in a row after Clemson went to Yaz, as they got a hold of a pair of Simmons attacks to close the set.
The fourth set was the loses of all with neither team able to wrestle more than a three point edge. The Seminoles looked to have put it out of reach at 21-17, before Clemson scored six of the next seven to take a 23-22 lead. The Tigers set up set point on a kill from Yaz at 24-23, but Yaz was blocked, the Seminoles recorded an ace, and Djurdjevic nailed a kill to close the match, 26-24.
The Tigers will welcome No. 22 Miami on Saturday at 6 p.m. in Jervey Gym. Clemson will honor senior Brittany Fennell and grad student Cansu Ozdemir before the match.
